A generation ago local members of United Church of Christ (UCC) congregations organized mission groups and volunteered personal time to visit patients, serve as candy stripers and witness to God’s healing presence at Deaconess Hospital. In April 2018, Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being opened its doors.
Mrs. Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund and Presidential Medal of Honor recipient, engaged with local and state policymakers, community leaders, Deaconess partners and family as the inaugural speaker in Deaconess’ series of Just for Kids (J4K) Community Conversations.
In December 2017, the Deaconess Foundation opened its new $8.8 million Center for Child Well-Being. But the roots of the 21,000-square-foot space go back to November 2013, when the foundation’s board approved a strategic plan to begin to develop a mission-appropriate facility.
